SAM2 Speed Awareness sign

In July 2024, a speed awareness sign (called a SAM2 sign) was installed in the parish at two locations each in the 30mph zones in Burgh and Tuttington. This is so that traffic can be monitored and possible speeding problems identified. The speed of an oncoming vehicle is measured and recorded by the sign. The sign remains blank for vehicles at travelling speeds below 28mph but for vehicles at 29 and 30 mph, their speed flashes up on the sign. This continues for vehicles moving at 31 mph or above but an additional SLOW DOWN message is displayed.

What happens to the speed data collected?

The SAM2 sign records vehicle speeds which are timed and dated. Photos of vehicles are not taken and vehicle registration details are not recorded. The data is collected and analysed by the Parish Council. It is discussed at Parish Council Meetings and summaries of the data will appear on the Parish Council website. The aim is to identify possible speeding problem locations for which potential solutions can be considered. The data will not routinely be sent to the police but if a problem is identified, the police can be consulted and it would be their decision whether further action is needed such as additional monitoring.

Who manages the SAM2 sign?

The SAM2 sign is owned and managed by the Burgh and Tuttington Parish Council. It was purchased under the Norfolk County Council Parish Partnership Scheme who provided half of the funds with the remaining half raised locally. The sign remains at one of the four locations in the Parish for up to one month. It is then moved by a team comprising Parish Councillors and local volunteers. If you would like to be involved in traffic issues within the parish, please contact the Parish Clerk. The map below shows the four sites for the SAM2 sign in the parish.
