Tuttington Plantation
At the last Parish Council Meeting the owners of the plantation kindly agreed to give a short presentation on their work and future plans.
The plantation is 80 years old and although mostly stocked with planted trees there are some older species in the area. It is neither a public area nor an ancient woodland.
Ninety percent of the trees are deciduous but unfortunately have been neglected for years. There are also lots of ash which are in various stages of dieback. Together with professional advisors from the RHS they are implementing a plan which will make the area safe and healthy, well managed and also increase its biodiversity.
The first stage of their work, in the southwest corner, has been to remove any dead or dangerous trees, diseased trees, coppice and thin the area. There is also evidence of damage from deer and squirrels. This work has, understandably, led to concern from some residents. However, it is a natural process of managing a wooded area such as this. No trees have been removed that did not need to be. The land will be re-planted with native trees, such as oak, wild cherry, birch and hazel.
The owners advised they had met many residents, and most were welcoming – they especially thanked the litter pickers as there was a great deal of dumped rubbish on the land which they are slowly removing.
The plan is a 10-year project and there will be more trees that will need to be removed but the wood will always remain.
